The Utility Operator position is responsible for solid waste processing plant operating work at the training level involving assistance to operators and learning plant operations and procedures. Work involves responsibility for safe assistance to Plant Operators. Duties include learning the operation of rolling stock and stationary equipment and handling solid waste. This work requires that the employees have some knowledge, skill and abilities in the operation of rolling stock equipment and plant controls.
Assists Plant Operators in plant operation and maintenance tasks.
Learns the operations of front loaders, trucks, forklifts and automobiles to move solid waste plant equipment and supplies.
Learns the operations of scales and processing equipment controls in weigh and process solid waste.
Separates solid waste material manually from the solid waste processing stream
Maintains plant buildings and grounds.
Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.
Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use.
Fills out job report forms, as assigned.
Performs related work as required.
The Utility Operator reports to the Yard Crew Leader.

Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each employee’s performance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and others must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.
This position requires working twelve hour rotating shifts with the possibility of overtime, weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
A high school diploma or the equivalent is desired. Experience in solid waste processing or manufacturing plant operation or the equivalent of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis.
Must have valid driver’s license.
