Duties Summary About the Position: The Springfield MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. A separate Department of Defense (DoD) agency, USMEPCOM is comprised of two geographical sectors and staffed with personnel from all military services. The mission of USMEPCOM and the Springfield MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards.
Responsibilities In-process applicants and verify biometrics
Screen and maintain medical records for current or past medical conditions that could be disqualifying for entrance or retention in the military
Interview applicants for medical conditions that could affect test results
Determine types of exams required and special testing due to age or Service requirements
Explain and demonstrate procedures to minimize confusion or false failures. Measure and record height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse rate
Perform phlebotomy to collect blood samples for lab tests
Operate centrifuge to separate specimens, process packages, and ship all specimens
Directly observe urine donations and perform drug testing and urinalysis
Remove cerumen (earwax) using specialized equipment and administer audiometric (hearing) tests
Conduct near/far visual acuity, color vision, and depth perception tests
Operate electrocardiograph equipment for EKG; interpret and evaluate results

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work such as assisting with physical examinations (such as optical or audiometric tests, EKG, urine collection/processing), performing phlebotomy, operating medical equipment (such as audiometers, stereoscopic vision testers, and/or centrifuges), and documenting patient's medical information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Medical Assisting, Healthcare Management, Healthcare Administration, etc.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
Selective Placement Factor: This position is gender specific. Only male applicants will be considered.
