Under limited supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in maintaining the safety and security of the Courts and court services; performs related work as assigned.
Essential functions of these positions include but not limited to: prolonged standing; working with and around others; vision acuity (near and far) for security observation; color vision for security functions; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation and security functions; touch/ finger dexterity for searching bags etc. Environmental factors: most work is conducted inside of courthouse; potential hazards associated with carrying a firearm in the performance of duties and at security check points.
Please note: This posting will be used to fill more than one Bailiff positions at the Williams Justice Court. Hours and schedule will vary based on demand; options for on-call or part-time work are available. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) along with Health and Safety Training (specific to COVID-19), will be provided Typical Duties BAILIFF I (Apprentice)
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only) Maintains the safety and physical security of the Court House facilities
Provides security services to all patrons in the Court House Facilities, including Judicial staff, customers, visitors, court staff and other agencies
Operates a security screening check point
Conducts security inspections of court facilities and equipment
Collects and processes fingerprints for criminal justice purposes, court employment.
Ensures the integrity of juries are maintained
Handles court documentation, evidence, and exhibits
Responds to and manages emergency or crisis situations, life-threatening, potential life-threatening and hazardous situations
Identifies potential security/safety concerns and notifies the Judge or Chief Bailiff
Remands or take subjects into custody
Provides customer service, answers visitor inquiries and provides direction

BAILIFF II
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only) Maintains the safety and physical security of the Court House facilities
Provides security services to all patron in the Court House Facilities, including Judicial staff, customers, visitors, court staff and other agencies
Operates a security screening check point
Conducts security inspections of court facilities and equipment
Collects and process fingerprints for criminal justice purposes, court employment, and for adoption applicants
Ensures the integrity of juries are maintained
Handles court documentation, evidence, and exhibits
Responds to and manages emergency or crisis situations, life-threating, potential life-threatening and hazardous situations
Identifies potential security/safety concerns and notifies the Chief Bailiff
Remands or take subjects into custody
Provides customer service, answers visitor inquiries and provides directions Assists with recruitment and hiring process and the training of new bailiff staff
Acts as supervisor in the absence of Chief Bailiff and Deputy Chief Bailiff

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BAILIFF I (Apprentice)
One year of experience in law enforcement, military or security work; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Must successfully pass a background check.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BAILIFF II
Two years of experience in law enforcement, military or security work; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Must successfully pass a background check.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Must be 21 years or older at time of hire. Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. Must not have any felony convictions(s) within the last 10 years or dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have any misdemeanor conviction(s) involving domestic violence within the previous five years.
This position is non-exempt from overtime.
This position is safety sensitive. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of:
Courthouse security principles, practices, techniques and equipment
Security systems and procedures
Escalation and de-escalation of force
Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds
Search and restraint practices, procedures and equipment
First Aid and proper handling of bio-hazards
Defensive tactics and self-defense practices and training


Some knowledge of:
Use of computers and word processing software

Court pro
Report preparation and record keeping
Emergency operations and preparedness


Skill in:
Communicating effectively with persons who are angry, confused, or anxious
Proficient use and care of firearms
Proper use of radio communication equipment and personal safety equipment


Ability to:
Analyze difficult situations and/or problems and make sound decisions
Maintain the safety and security of assigned areas and persons
Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds under stressful circumstances
Act quickly and calmly with proper judgment in emergency situations
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
Follow written and verbal instructions
Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time
