The parent advocate and development associate joins ’s work supporting parents and caregivers in the following core areas: Supporting families involved with local system of care programs
Family outreach, engagement and training
System outreach, education and consultation
Other collaboration & special projects


Core responsibilities: Supporting families involved with local system of care programs
Attend staff meetings and other program meetings as necessary
Make contact with new families upon direction by program leader & answer questions and provide education about program process & outcomes
Collaborates with program team to review and improve systems & processes for program services
Works with system of care team members to identify other avenues to provide family support within system of care programs
Maintains documentation of family support/coaching contact and reviews with supervisor
Participates in regular supervision with supervisor(s) to review approaches, improve skills and monitor for needed support
Family outreach, engagement and training
Designs and leads outreach, engagement and empowerment groups, trainings and community events for families
Reaches out to families through using social media, hosting family activities, and collaboration with existing community groups including cultural and ethnic groups.
Assures family participation and leadership in all aspects of the system of care
Identifies and facilitate collaboration opportunities with partners to improve the system of care
Collaborates with team and partners on potential and existing parent support opportunities across Elkhart County
System outreach, education and consultation
Supports targeted mental health outreach, education and prevention strategies for children, youth and caregivers through strategies such as stigma reduction, suicide prevention, early help seeking and prevention activities.
Makes contact with new and existing system of care partners to provide education of the value of family/youth voice
Provides coaching to system of care partners on how to cultivate family/youth voice within their organizations/communities
Participates and supports family member involvement and sharing of expertise in training programs, task forces and committees at a local, state and/or national level that enhance the implementation of system of care values for families and youth.
Assists in developing funding sources and sustainability of the local system of care for the mental health of children and youth
Other Collaboration & Special projects
Participate as a full member of the system of care team to accomplish goals and objectives of active grants
Provide consultation/capacity building assistance to system of care partners in project focused work as requested
Support research into key system of care quarterly focus issues and collaborate with team to develop related programs, trainings and/or action items
Collaborate with system of care staff
Represent the system of care in community events and outreach activities as requested
Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
Provide input into evaluation efforts, collect data and maintain documentation as needed
Maintains documentation of activities and expenses


Supervision/delegation:
The Family Advocate receives regular programmatic supervision from the SOC Operations Coordinator and provides supervision to Family Advocates on the system of care team. This position has responsibility for direction of others during special projects with staff and volunteers.
Customer Contact/Relationships:
This person interacts with families of children with behavioral health needs and a variety of professionals including staff, contractors, vendors, referral sources and business partners.
GED or High School Diploma; Bachelors degree preferred.
Must be a primary caregiver (biological parent, kinship caregiver, foster parent, adoptive parent) of a child, youth or young adult, who has received or is receiving behavioral health services. Experience includes navigating and advocating within child-serving systems such as mental health, juvenile justice, education or child welfare.
