The Gainesville Police Department is seeking a responsible and detailed individual to work as an Account Clerk I to perform basic and routine accounting and/or financial data transactions, basic analysis and/or reconciliation of accounts payables, accounts receivable and accounting and billing system transactions including, but not limited to, invoice payments, payroll preparation, financial database and records maintenance.
The ideal candidate will have: Excellent customer service skills
Experience with payroll & billing
Ability to analyze issues and exercise good judgment in providing solutions to timekeeping, payroll and billing activities
Ability to successfully multi-task
Typing at a speed acceptable to departmental needs may be required.


To be considered for the Account Clerk I position you must have: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of work experience in sub-professional accounting, bookkeeping, payroll or other revenue-related accounting work; an Associate of Arts degree with at least 6 semester hours of accounting can be substituted for six months of experience; Oran equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Please note: Experience utilizing a Payroll system such as Advantage Finance or RTE is preferred.
Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word preferred. Assessments may be administered.
Typing at a speed acceptable to departmental needs.

Passing score of over 35 wpm NET for Typing, and passing score of Moderate Knowledge and above for Excel and Word may be delivered to the City of Gainesville's Human Resources/Organizational Development Department, 222 E. University Avenue (Old Library Building next to City Hall), or a scan can be sent to HR@CityofGainesville.org or a fax including a cover sheet and the first page of each test to 352-334-2055 by 5:00 pm on Monday August 31, 2020, to be considered for this position.
You will need to re-test if the tests you submitted are dated more than one year ago, before August 31, 2019, or if your current scores on file are not at or higher than 35 wpm NET for typing and Moderate Knowledge overall scores for Word and Excel.

Job Description SUMMARY Processes basic and routine accounting and/or utility billing functions including, but not limited to, invoice payments, payroll preparation, financial database and records maintenance, inventory, analyzing meter readings for utility billing and utility recordkeeping. May perform basic and routine calculating, posting and verifying duties to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting and/or payroll records. Learns all applicable software, organizational processes and procedures. May be expected, through on-the-job training, to progress to the Account Clerk II level. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor or coordinator and work under close to general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its routine, non-complex nature and from lower classes by its scope of tasks and level of responsibility. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Depending on area of assignment: Verifies, inputs, and retrieves basic and routine financial data transactions in computer system. Calculates and prepares basic and routine checks for payments of invoices, utilities, taxes and other payments. Performs basic analysis and/or reconciliation of accounts payables, accounts receivable and/or utility accounting and billing system problems. Classifies records and summarizes basic and routine numerical and financial data through the use of ledgers, journals and/or computers, in order to compile and keep financial records. Calculates, prepares and issues basic and routine bills, invoices, account statements and other financial statements according to established procedures. Learns and complies with organizational, Federal and state policies, procedures and regulations. Performs basic and routine financial calculations, such as amounts due, interest charges, balances and discounts. Prepares bank deposits by compiling data from cashiers, verifying and balancing receipts and sending cash, checks or other forms of payments to banks. Receives, records, and banks cash, checks and vouchers. Compiles basic and routine statistical, financial, accounting or auditing reports and tables pertaining to such matters as cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll. Reviews the basic and routine processing of purchase orders, payment vouchers and expenditure authorizations and payroll for accuracy and compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Establishes and maintains vendor and department financial records. Works with customers and vendors to calculate and make adjustments to customer accounts to correct billing errors. Monitors and processes delinquent accounts. Prepares and maintains inventory, materials and property accounting and tracking records. Prepares and processes payroll information. Tracks work order completion and grant processing. Attends work on a continuous and regular basis. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS May provide assistance to other personnel in the analysis and research of financial data and in the preparation of regular and special fiscal reports. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Basic knowledge of financial operations and bookkeeping principles and standard office terminology, procedures, routines and equipment. Basic knowledge of, and ability and willingness to apply, appropriate and applicable accounting principles and procedures, and applications to accounting functions. Basic knowledge of rules and regulations of keeping accounting records. Knowledge of business English and arithmetic. Ability to skillfully operate computers and relevant software and other business machines. Ability and willingness to analyze basic and routine utility accounting, billing system and payroll problems. Ability to make mathematical calculations with reasonable speed and accuracy.
