Apex is excited to have an opportunity for a highly experienced, recreational professional to join our Apex Leadership Team to take our recreational programs and facilities to the next level. This exciting opportunity has the potential to manage multiple, busy, high-revenue producing facilities within the Apex portfolio of facilities and to implement the Apex vision which is to envision an integrated, diverse and collaborative recreation district that plays a key role in the vibrancy of our community and the health and happiness of those who live here through a variety of exceptional offerings including athletics, fitness, education, arts and community events for all interests, ability levels and ages.
The Director of Recreation Services is responsible for developing, supporting and guiding assigned Recreation Services Division. Encourages innovation, excellence and efficiency. Assists the Executive Director in managing recreation services at various locations throughout the District. Possible facility/program assignments include the following: Secrest Recreation Center (Licensed Child Care/Camps, Teen Center, Fitness, Outdoor and Warm Water Therapy Pools), Community Recreation Center (Active Older Adults), Fitzmorris Recreation Center (Fitness Center, Group Exercise, Outdoor Pool), Ice Arena and other possible recreation centers and programs within the Apex portfolio of facilities based upon expertise of selected candidate and other Recreation Services Directors.
Responsible for staff training and development in the areas of programs and evaluation, facility management, customer service and administration. Helps develop staff, establish Division goals, and conducts annual performance evaluations. Hires, trains and motivates staff and directs work plans.
Helps conduct research and prepares data for studies, makes recommendations to help determine policy, philosophy or procedures; communicates the District’s plans, policies, and procedures to staff and the public.
Develops, monitors and administers budget for facilities; ensures efficient use of budgeted funds; monitors revenue and expenses for fiscal management maximizing the cost recovery.
Provides input on capital projects with Executive Director and helps coordinate projects within the department and across the organization.
Evaluates and recommends fees for assigned areas consistent with the District’s policy and cost recovery philosophy.
Assists in the development of systems for the accurate reporting of annual attendance, participation and registration reports.
Coordinates the work of assigned areas of responsibility with that of other department and organization staff.
Responsible for the coordination of marketing efforts for facilities and programs with the recreation and marketing staff; prepares a variety of manuals, special reports and studies for analysis and decision-making purposes.
Responsible for evaluating and approving contracts for program execution; directs the maintenance of accurate records.
Researches, evaluates and secures grant and sponsor funding.
Develops strong community partnerships.
Is an active member of Emergency Preparedness team and conducts regular emergency drills at facilities. Ensures security and safety of facilities and programs.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Oversees and exercises discretion over the operations and programs in the facilities assigned. Directly supervises management-level staff.
Ability to focus on and effectively conceptualize how administrative decisions and functions will affect the organization over both the long- and short-run.
Ability to ensure compliance with District policies, procedures, rules and regulations through effective management of subordinates.
Knowledge and skill to effectively manage the coordination of resources of the department to respond successfully to various situations.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in order to effectively communicate with and establish good working relationships with subordinates, coworkers, and public officials.
Ability to explain the rationale of policies, rules and procedures to subordinates to ensure not only compliance, but to heighten the awareness of potential problems that may exist without compliance from employees.
Associate is expected to exhibit the district’s core values of Honesty, Attitude, Loyalty, and Teamwork. Education and Experience EDUCATION/FORMAL TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Leisure Services, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field; Master’s Degree preferred. Possess and maintain a Colorado Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record. Must possess the following certifications or obtain within 60 days of hire: CPR, Standard First Aid, AED. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred. Aquatic Facility Operators License (AFO) OR Certified Pool Operators Certificate (CPO)preferred (if areas of responsibility include aquatics).
EXPERIENCE: Five years of supervisory experience in recreation facility and program management. Work Environment WORK ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally, the employee will be required to work outside or drive in varying temperatures and conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in a climate-controlled office environment but may be exposed to extreme heat/cold and wetness/humidity on an occasional basis. The noise in the work environment is usually at low levels.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk, and frequently use hands, fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to carry, pull, push, or lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and 100 pounds assisted.
TRAVEL: Occasionally, the employee will be required to drive to facilities under their supervision or other locations for work related meetings.
