What you will be doing if you are offered this position & accept:
Our Manager, PGS Safety provides leadership and oversight of all operational safety and environmental safety programs for Peoples Gas; Contributes to and executes PGS’ safety plan including activities that adds to team member, contractor and public safety and ensuring compliance with OSHA, FMCSA and PHMSA rules as well as corporate safety programs. Supervises the Safety Advisors in the PGS Safety team. Coordinates and communicates with Emera Corporate Safety and ensures consistency of safety programs.
More specifically, the Manager, PGS Safety:
Key contributor to the development and execution of the PGS Pipeline Safety Management System and oversight of PGS’ safety plan including: Accountable for the $1,000,000+ O&M department budget.
Contributes to the development and implementation of the Pipeline Safety Management System for PGS, including the key elements of safety risk management, leadership and commitment, stakeholder engagement, incident investigation and quality assurance safety planning.
Acts as and demonstrates safety leadership through the promotion and support of a strong safety culture at PGS. Committed to the guiding principles of PGS’ Pipeline Safety Management System.
Responsible for the design, coordination, and change management regarding new PGS safety activities, programs, and initiatives.
Represents PGS in a leadership and subject matter capacity on safety related utility trade associations such as Southern Gas Association (SGA) and the American Gas Association (AGA) peer review teams.
Accountable to Director PGS Pipeline Safety & Operations Support and company senior management to ensure Safety programs comply with Federal (i.e., OSHA, PHMSA, FMCSA etc.), State (Florida Public Service Commission) and local regulations and standards.
Researches applicable laws, regulations, consensus standards, best practices, and published literature using internal and external resources to develop benchmarks for assessing an organization’s safety performance and to support the evaluation of safety risk.
Leads the continued enhancement of PGS’s safety data management system by prioritizing process automation needs and collaborating with systems support and information technology teams to implement potential solutions. Seeks opportunities to enhance the analytical utilization of safety data to ensure proactive prevention of injury or incidents.
Enhances existing programs to meet changing business needs and regulatory requirements. Oversees safety training as needed, such as Drug & Alcohol and Defensive Driving, for team members.
Leads and coordinates the development of PGS’ inter-department safety committees.


Drives continued development of PGS’ Contract Business Partner Safety Plan, monitoring safety efforts and ensuring that contract business partners have appropriate safety programs and effectively address safety concerns/issues.
Oversees PGS environmental activities affecting operations. Works with PGS Operations and Tampa Electric’s Environmental Services department to ensure processes and controls are in place to minimize environmental safety or compliance issues.
Contributes to the development and implementation of PGS’ Environmental Management System including guiding an environmental coordinator team tasked with managing environmental processes for the company.


Oversees PGS’ Emergency Preparedness Plan including continuous development, training, and communications.
Develops and manages a team of regional Safety Advisors and support personnel Provides guidance to Safety Advisors regarding their respective incident investigations, safety program coordination, safety training and other safety related regional support.
Directs Administrative support in performance of communications and record retention for the maintenance of safety and health records, PHMSA drug and alcohol compliance for PGS and contractors, OSHA, FMCSA (Commercial Driver Licenses) files for compliance, and safety statistic reporting to Emera Corporate Safety and the PGS’ Board of Directors.



What you must have before you can be considered:
Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Business, or related field from a regionally accredited college/university.
A minimum of six (6) years of experience performing in a functional safety role with progressively more complex assignments, including at least 1-2 years of supervisory experience.
Must be familiar with OSHA requirements and PHMSA regulations.
Strong, effective written and verbal communication skills.
Intermediate proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) accreditation.
Professional certifications demonstrating safety, assurance, business or management proficiency.
Functional safety role experience within a large complex organization.
Utility industry experience.
Quality assurance planning and execution.

Working Conditions:
Normal office environment with frequent site visits to Gas Operations work locations. This will require travel throughout the PGS service territories.
