The incumbent works in the Service and Production areas of Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) and performs tasks related to food production and food service with several steps, or a sequence of tasks, that require attention. The incumbent shall follow established procedures in service operations including food handling and preparation, food storage, and food delivery. Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to: Selects and adds food items to patient trays as they progress along the tray assembly line
according to specific regular or modified diet menus, individual patient diet cards, or patient preference designations seen on the diet cards. Delivers trays to patients' bedside and reports if the patient has comments or complaints to the NFS supervisor. Breaks down and cleans the station after the serving period, returns food to the proper storage
area and labels leftovers or unused items in the proper manner. Collects soiled trays from bedsides, ward areas, or other eating areas, and returns soiled trays and dishes to the dish room after meals. Sets up and operates the mechanical dishwasher (continuous conveyor belt/flight type) or pot/pan washing equipment. Loads and/or removes dishes, pots, and pans from the pot/pan washer. Cleans floors and walls with mops, cloths, and/or powered cleaning equipment as
instructed. Cleans walk-in refrigerators and freezers and selects the appropriate cleaning agents based on prior instructions and follows established cleaning procedures using proper techniques. Prepares coffee and menu items according to the number of servings required. Portions other
food items (e.g., gelatins, juices, salads, desserts, oral supplements, etc.) into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and containers. Work Schedule: The incumbent will be assigned to either the early, late, or a relief shift in food service based on a quarterly rotation schedule. Position Description Title/PD#: Food Service Worker/PD07307A Physical Requirements: On the job, the incumbent may be subjected to: Continuous walking, standing, as well as frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts (up to 45 pounds) or moves objects (e.g., pushing small carts of dirty dishes). Occasional lifts or moves heavy objects (e.g., filing and transporting dispensers). Work is performed in kitchen areas where the southern climate can cause very warm kitchen conditions. The steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment sometimes contribute to temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities. There is also danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezer units.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: ~ Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
