VDOT’s Salem District (Salem Residency) has openings for maintenance operators which covers Hanging Rock, Southwest, Troutville, Buchanan, Eagle Rock and New Castle Area Headquarters.
We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor.
As a maintenance operator, you will: respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies in Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig Counties.

You are minimally qualified if you have: knowledge of related safety policies, procedures, and programs knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred qualifications include: valid CDL and applicable endorsements recent experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education. Flagger & Work Zone certification and recent applicable experience.

Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside of normal work hours to insure the safety of the traveling public. This includes, but is not limited to, snow/ice, hurricanes and other natural or man-made disasters.
Applicants selected for finalists will be required to perform an in person skills demonstration. This recruitment may be used to fill additional positions.

Multiple Transportation Operator Level II positions may be filled from this recruitment in the Salem Residency (Roanoke, Botetourt & Craig County locations).
Should we be unsuccessful in filling all vacancies with applicants from the acquired talent pool with applicants qualified for Transportation Operator II level positions as advertised, we may use this recruitment’s applicant pool to fill additional positions at the Transportation Operator II APPRENTICE level, at the hiring range of $30,983 – $33,000.
This recruitment may be used to fill part-time/wage positions (no benefits) in Salem Residency. These positions may work up to 1500 hours within the period May 1 to April 30. Transportation Operator II Wage (CDL) positions will have the salary range of $14.90 – $24.00. This recruitment may be used to fill Transportation Operator (TO I) Laborer level positions (Non CDL) at the salary range of $12.50 to $15.50 per hour.
