The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina's aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 2,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
Description of Work:
Reporting directly to the Education Curator, this position is responsible for developing and presenting educational programs, with a focus on children and family programs, to the public and aquarium visitors, to school and pre-K groups, family groups, and other special interest groups. The Children's Program Specialist will prepare curriculum materials, respond to visitor requests and questions, utilize electronic communication systems, and will be responsible for designing, creating and supervising programs incorporating a variety of experiential learning methods focusing on marine science topics, while incorporating the arts, theater, and music, when applicable. This position will work closely with another Special Activities Coordinator to implement a variety of fee-based programming including facility tours, outdoor recreation programs, school group programs and other special events.
Primary job duties include preparing and facilitating children's programs using live animals; developing, scheduling and implementing birthday parties, sleepovers, family programs, camps, and scout programs; preparing and presenting age-appropriate curriculum specific to programs; serving as a resource for visitors and community members; evaluating education programs for effectiveness; and training, supervising and evaluating interns, volunteers, and temporary staff. This position works cooperatively with other departments to achieve the overall mission of the Aquarium. Weekend, evening and holiday work required.
Occasional travel is required for Aquarium meetings. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below: Experience in developing and presenting effective and engaging public programs in an informal setting in a zoo, aquarium, park, nature center, camp, or museum.
Experience working with, and supervising, youth in an educational program.
Experience presenting live animals and responding to questions from participants.
Weekend, evening and holiday work will be required. Occasional travel is also
