Schedule: Monday-Friday (first shift); occassional weekends as required; no on-call
The Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for support of successful operation and utilization of medication management and distribution technology throughout the Duke Regional Hospital organization, including automated dispensing cabinets, purchasing and receiving functions. and inventory management technology. This position also provides oversight of controlled substance distribution systems. and assures compliance with applicable federal and state regulations. This position requires flexibility and knowledge in all areas listed below to provide supplemental support to the inventory specialists and the lead automation and controlled substance specialist. This position reports directly to the Assistant Pharmacy Director.
Work Performed (Pharmacy Tech II)
Retrieve and interpret medication orders: perform pharmaceutical calculations. taking into account patient and drug characteristics : enter medication orders into pharmacy computer system for pharmacist's review. Label. fill and deliver medication to appropriate patient care locations. Receive and triage information requests: research and provide information where appropriate: referother inquiries to pharmacist. Inventory.order. receive and stock drugs and supplies. Retrieve discontinued or expired medications from stock and patient areas: discard or return to stock as appropriate: complete corresponding documentation. Perform specialized and advanced procedures specific to assigned pharmacy area.including but not limited to North Central. Surgical Suite.Medicine-Surgery, Morris Cancer Center. Outpatient. Women and Children. Pediatric Specialty, St erile Products, lnvestigational Drug Service. Serve as a primary training resource for new technicians and assist in evaluating their progress as directed: may assist inpreparing schedules. setting work priorities and making work assignments as directed. Assist in documentation of unit-specific procedures and quality assurance activities under Pharmacist's review. Assist other technicians in performing complex procedures and/or calcu lations as required. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Knowledge. Skills and Abilities
Automated Dispensing Cabinet Responsibilities
Assists Lead Automation and Controlled Substance Specialist (LACSS) as needed to accurately maintain formulary and system databases for automated dispensing cabinets (ADC). and inventory management systems. Ensures safe use or automated dispensing cabinets by assisting with database maintenance and report creation when needed following safety recommendations/guidelines. identifying areas for improvement andsuccessfully implementing plans to address any issues as requested. Successfully triages and investigates problems reported by customers and ensures their satisfactory resolution. Fully understands the utility and application of available reports to ensure appropriate optimization of all automated systems. Provides ongoing ADC and Carousel optimization to best utilize cabinet space and decrease waste due to expired medications. Directs relevant reports to appropriate parties regarding billing. overrides. outdated medications, and user practices. Assists LACSS as needed to provide leadership and project management for all upgrades. expansions. and platform changes for all Pharmacy technology. directing interactions on behalf of the hospital with all vendorsoftware and hardware specialists. Maintains user databases for automated dispensing systems. inventory management systems. according to hospital and departmental security guidelines. Works closely with Assistant Director of Pharmacy, procurement specialists. and LACSS to orient and train newly hired pharmacy staff by providing clear and accurate instruction. Assist with the development andmaintenance of orientation/training documents for both pharmacy and nursing staffs for all relevant systems and processes. Provides pharmacy stalf training to new hires and existing staff as it pertains lo correct use of medication automation systems. Assist when needed daily reviews of controlled drug discrepancies and conducts audits as scheduled in order to successfully identify suspicious activities or errors. Assists LACSS as needed to accurately maintain appropriate controlled substance records and ensures that expired and wasted controlled substances are processed as required by DEA regulations. Assists LACSS as needed to ensure that controlled substance storage areas throughout AAHS, including those within the Pharmacy. are inventoried monthly. per North Carolina Board of Pharmacy regulations. Assist in maintaining most aspects of the Omnicell system to include hardware and software: i.e. help manage the Omnicell formulary and user database and monitor/adjust par levels based on med usage. Assist in monitoring and repairing of Omnicell equipment: reconfigure cabinets as needed to meet the needs of pharmacy and any unit Assist LACSS in serving as a liaison between pharmacy and nursing to maintain Omnicell override groups: work closely with Assistant Director. Omnicell Service Technician and Omnicell Tech support to resolveissues in a timely manner. Assist in creation, update. and revision of ADC procedures. Assist with training/education of all Pharmacy personnel on the use of the Omnicell system. Assist in providing a variety of reports to decentralized pharmacists who are monitoring Omnicell issues: provide records of narcotic returns and wastes on weekly basis. Assist in overseeing daily operation of the controlled substance vault by maintaining adequate inventory, monitoring records and training pharmacy personnel in the vault process. Assist in maintaining records and documentation of all controlled substance medications through: assign user access for pharmacy start based on specific job functions with Omnicell system. Assist in using nursing unit inspection/outdate reports to remove meds or adjust par levels to prevent waste.. Assist in reviewing and maintaining a variety or reports for Omnicell and controlled substance vault
Controlled Substance Management Duties
Prepare Rx Kits & Syringes (weekly). Ordering necessary supplies needed in vault (e.g. bottles, lids. bags. forms). Reconcile discrepancies, complete and lite paperwork within vault. Perform stock replenishments during shift. Deliver Ancillary Restocks. Check for and pull expired meds from ancillary areas daily. Inventory controlled substance vault monthly. Manage waste of controlled substances. Work closely with Lead Automation and Controlled Substance Specialist (LACSS). Assist in reviewing. documenting, and following up on any Omnicell or controlled substance incidents in the Safety Reporting System. Assist conducting complete inventory of all controlled substances once per month. Primary job duties will relate to Omnicell with coverage of the narcotic vault as needed to assist and in absence of the Omnicell Administrator. Work closely with OmnicelVNarcotic Control Technician
Inventory and Procurement Duties
Assists and/or provide support to procurement specialists as needed. Duties to include checking in received goods, restocking Carousel and shelves. monitoring expiration dates, receipt, unpacking. and package
preparation in compliance with USP 800. Reporting drug shortages and potential stock-outs. Participation in biannual inventory. Other duties as needed in the inventory role. Participates in weekly pharmacy operations meetings, departmental huddles. and attends monthly. Medication Safety Committee meetings. Completes at least one leadership or development course applicable to new technology, pharmacy regulations or other course related to specialist work annually. Attend annualMedication Safety and Quality conference when possible.
Work requires high school or equivalent. Successful completion of a formalized Pharmacy Technician
Work requires a minimum of two years experience as a Pharmacy Technician PLUS completion of advanced competencies checklist as documented and approved by the Department of Pharmacy OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Controlled durg inventory management and Omnicell or ADC experience and vault experience, highly preferred.
Degrees, Licensures. Certifications
Pharmacy technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). North
Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
